Confident Children Chat w/ The Expat Mom

I had the privilege of being a guest on The Expat Mom Podcast. During our chat we discuss the ups and downs of ex-pat life, how to build confidence in children, and my upcoming book, The Adventures of Little Selfie! (Yes, book #3 is on its way!!)

In honor our our time together, I thought I would share some of what we talked about, and what The Adventures of Little Selfie is all about.

  1. Unconditional Love and Acceptance: Show your children that your love and acceptance are unwavering - no matter what. Help them understand that their worth as individuals goes far beyond external accomplishments or what others think of them.

  2. Encourage Independence: Allow your children to take age-appropriate risks and make decisions. Support their efforts to solve problems and learn from their mistakes. This fosters a sense of competence and self-reliance, boosting their self-esteem.

  3. Celebrate Strengths and Efforts: Recognize and appreciate your children's strengths, talents, and efforts. Praise them for their hard work, perseverance, and personal growth. Focusing on their positive attributes instills confidence and motivates them to explore their full potential.

  4. Limit Comparisons: Discourage constant comparisons, as they can erode self-esteem. Teach your children to appreciate their unique qualities and talents. Encourage them to focus on their progress and personal achievements instead of comparing themselves to others.

  5. Seek Professional Help: If you notice persistent signs of low self-esteem in your child, such as withdrawal, excessive self-criticism, or a lack of interest in activities, consider seeking guidance from a mental health professional. They can provide valuable support and strategies tailored to your child's specific needs.

Remember, building self-esteem is an ongoing process that requires patience, consistency, and unconditional support. By empowering our children to be themselves, believe in themselves, and embrace their unique qualities, we lay the foundation for their future success and happiness.
